Unique Azilal boucherouite kilim
Rugs from the Azilal province are rare and were almost unknown to the market until the late 1990's. Their wool tends to be finer, producing a lustrous, almost cloth-like covering. They feature simplistic geometric shapes and patterns with sometimes dashes of vibrant colours always on a cream background.
Azilal rugs have become a popular alternative to the minimalist and monochrome Beni Ouarain rugs. Similarly, they are increasingly hard to find and are amongst the most highly sought after Berber tribal rugs.
I found this stunning piece during one of my many purchasing trips to Marrakech, in the heart of the carpet souk.
The goat hairs that are used to make the linear design are naturally sourced in the atlas mountains, where the Azilal rugs are typically made. They are with the some natural wool, but mostly with recycled rags. it's a unique vintage discovry of which I am very proud, making it a highly collectible piece.
