Perfect imperfection

Tamegroute is a village located in the Draa River valley in southern Morocco. It historically served as a hub of learning and religion through its famous Sufi Zawiya islamic school.
Its glazed ceramics are also very well known. There’s a particular shade of green traditionally used in the pottery of this region; a green you won’t find anywhere else. It’s the color of Islam.
The handmade pottery has beautiful shades of green and nowadays also - with a little twist of ingredients - brownish olive! The ancient glaze contains a high proportion of silica, manganese, cobalt, a local type of rock, barley flower ànd a hint of copper, which, once baked in clay stoves, results in the striking green color. At times, copper is replaced with iron oxide to obtain a more brown/olive coloured result.
In the ovens, the pieces are stacked together, which causes little scars. That's why they're so unique... The dripping causes each piece to be different with its own imperfections and irregular color tones.
Wabi Sabi craftsmanship, true collectors’ items
